Sweden approves London Agreement
On April 4, 2008 the Swedish government took the formal decision that the London Agreement will come into effect in Sweden on May 1, 2008. The government's decision was preceded by a decision pertaining to changes in the Swedish patent law that will come into effect on the same day.
The changes in the Swedish patent law entail, among other things, that most European patents that are granted in Sweden do not have to be translated into Swedish if an English version already exists. However, the patent claims still need to be translated into Swedish.
     – In conjunction with the London Agreement coming into effect in Sweden, costs for European patent applications will decrease. Thus it will be easier for small and medium-sized companies to apply for European patents, which we regard as being very positive, says Leif Karlsson, patent attorney at Ström & Gulliksson.

Continued increase in the number of PCT applications
The World Intellectual Property Organization, WIPO, reports that thereis a continued increase in activity in the international patent system,PCT. Between 2006 and 2007, a 5 % increase took place in thenumber of PCT applications filed. In first place came the USA with 33.5% of all applications, followed by Japan (17.8 %), Germany (11.6 %),South Korea (4.5 %), and France (4.1 %). The total percentage ofapplications filed by EU member states was 34 % during the same period.
     – A clear trend is that the Far East is climbing quickly in thestatistics with a continued high rate of activity from Japan and alarge increase in applications from China, and also South Korea. We areconfident we can take advantage of our network of contacts in thesecountries on an even larger scale in the years to come, says BjörnAndersson, Vice President of Ström & Gulliksson.
Amongcompanies, Japanese Matsushita Electric Industrial Company came infirst place, closely followed by Dutch giant Koninklijke PhilipsElectronics. In third place was the German company Siemens, whilst theChinese company Huawei Technologies and the German company Robert Boschcame in fourth and fifth place, respectively. At the moment, thefastest growing technology branches are nuclear power andtelecommunications.
The statistics show that even the number ofelectronic PCT applications has increased dramatically. During 2007,67.4 % of all applications were filed electronically, which is anincrease of 10 % since 2006.
     – This development is naturalbecause processing becomes both easier and safer. That's why Ström& Gulliksson, since a couple of years, only file applicationselectronically, says Björn Andersson.
